House Passes the Laken Riley Act

January 7, 2025

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Jeff Crank (CO-05) voted in favor of the Laken Riley Act, which passed out of the House. In response, the Congressman has released the following statement:

“The past four years under the Biden-Harris Administration has allowed every state to become a border state,” said Congressman Crank. “This act will ensure that illegal aliens, such as Laken Riley’s murderer, are detained and deported before they have the opportunity to commit heinous crimes.”

Background:

In February 2024, Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student, was murdered by Jose Ibarra, an illegal immigrant released into the United States by the Biden-Harris Administration. Before murdering Riley, Ibarra was arrested for theft, however, local authorities in Georgia released him.

H.R. 29, the Laken Riley Act, strengthens immigration laws by:

  1. Mandating ICE detention for illegal aliens who are charged with, convicted of, arrested for, admit having committed, or admit committing acts that constitute the essential elements of any burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting offense and requiring the Department of Homeland Security to issue a detainer for these illegal aliens and take custody of them “effectively and expeditiously.”
