Rep. Crank Votes to Protect 2nd Amendment Rights for our Nation's Heroes

May 21, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Representative Jeff Crank (CO-05) voted in favor of H.R. 1041, The Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act.

The Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act would prohibit the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) from reporting veterans to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) solely because they have been provided with a fiduciary to help them manage their VA financial benefits.

For decades, the VA has been arbitrarily submitting hundreds of thousands of veterans as prohibited persons to NICS simply because have they have been assigned a fiduciary to help manage the VA benefits that they’ve earned through their service to our country. Not only is this practice a slap in the face of those who have honorably served our nation but it also forces veterans to choose between getting help and keeping their Second Amendment rights. H.R. 1041 would put a stop to this shameful practice under the law, as well as remove any veteran from NICS that has been a victim of the policy.

"Our veterans should not be treated as second-class citizens," said Rep. Crank. "Here in El Paso County, I am proud to represent over 100,000 veterans and active-duty service members. By passing the Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act, we are permanently ending this practice and protecting the rights of our nation's heroes."
